Power Amplifiers
Power amplifiers are charged with the task of powering loudspeakers and represent a complete amplifier when used in conjunction with a suitable pre amplifier. The very highest performance levels are possible when the pre and the power sections of amplification are separated and placed in their own casing, and with their own power supply. Sometimes, the individual channels of power amplification are also separated, making what are known as mono amplifiers or monoblocs. These tend to be the most powerful of hi-fi amplifiers and offer the added benefit of less interaction between the individual channels.
A very elaborate amplifier setup may involve using more than one amplifier channel per speaker. It is possible to contruct very high powered systems in this way, especially when tri-amping a premium quality 3-way speaker such as those from ATC. The number of amplifiers that can be used per channel depends on the number of discrete inputs on the speakers being used.
